Chapter 20

Sierra nuzzled into Gavin’s body, inhaling his woodsy smell. His chest lifted and fell evenly, and she didn’t wake him, content to lie next to him and cuddle. She could get used to going to bed with him and waking up in his arms. Perhaps Gavin was right, and it was time for them to move in together. If they weren’t compatible, she could always move back to her own room. Atterbury’s staff wouldn’t mind. Yeah, right. She was rationalizing again. If Gavin and she didn’t find a rhythm in sharing a space, it might very well spell the end for them. Gavin was a traditional guy. He wouldn’t ever be okay with having two spaces. And neither would she.

The vibration of her cell tore her out of her thoughts. It was a text from Pia, asking Sierra to come down for breakfast. She didn’t want to leave the warm bed or the man in it, but she did. Even though the text sounded casual, she suspected that the Van Buren’s were grilling their daughter again, and that Pia could use some help.

Ten minutes later, Sierra found Pia at a table with Cooper. They seemed to be having a good conversation, judging by their open body postures and her tilted head. Deciding to give them some privacy, Sierra spun around and came face-to-face with Hank and Emilian.

“Ah, there she is, Lorna’s little star,” Emilian said.

“We were just talking about you,” Hank added.

Somehow, Sierra found herself sitting between the two men, Cooper and Pia on the opposite side of the table. Emilian insisted on hearing all about Sierra’s Fluidus abilities and what he called “adventures.” She tried several times to highlight the role Cooper and Pia played in the success of the missions but was met with deaf ears. It was as if neither father was willing to acknowledge his child’s triumphs.

The conversation took a further nosedive when Michelle joined. “Pia was always such a funny little thing,” she said. “I’m glad that Lorna found some use for her.”

“Pia is very talented.” Cooper’s normally lake-blue eyes turned ebony with ire. “I won’t sit by and let you put her down. Come, Pia.” He stood, and after a beat, Pia rose too. They walked out of the cafeteria, their bodies so close they were almost touching.

Sierra smiled. Perhaps there was hope for Pia and Cooper after all. Pia’s notion that he hated her seemed incorrect. Yes, she had hurt him, but it was obvious he still cared about her.

“How rude! I can’t believe your son just spoke to me like that,” Michelle huffed.

Hank murmured something incomprehensible underneath his breath.

Sierra chose that moment to excuse herself. She meant to pick up a few pastries for Gavin but stopped midmotion as she spotted Oliver. He was with a group of friends, drinking bloody Mary’s for breakfast and eating from a plate filled with nothing but bacon and cheese. He threw his head back laughing, not showing an ounce of regret for what he had done to her.
